“All the appreciation and response towards our work gives me and my team immense encouragement and motivation to continue. Fortunately, there has never been a no sale period.” Says Devika Kerongay , the founder of ‘Fidgety fingers’.
Born to parents, Mrs. Tika Gurung and late Mr.P.K. Gurung, she completed her schooling from Holy Cross School, Tadong and pursued her further education in photography from Regional Institute of Printing Technology, Jadavpur, Kolkata.
Devika wanted to set up a brand which would be accepted and fair well among the buyers. She was keen on her product outreach. Fidgety fingers was founded on September 1st 2015, after half a decade of learning and planning.
“Dream big, believe in it and work hard for it. Don’t just settle for success. You deserve to be more than just being successful. Go beyond success”, says Devika.
Fidgety fingers now, is a well-known example of social entrepreneurship. It produces quality products and also, revives the fibre art. It is empowering local women- teaching them craft and knitting, and employing them. Their products are praise-worthy.
She recalls her encounter with some women, while working for an NGO. They mostly came from various family backgrounds with different histories of social, physical and sexual abuse. She had the opportunity to train them to craft, and found them as extremely enthusiast learners. Devika was motivated by their positivity, despite all the odds in life. “These women were my first inspiration towards my venture”, she adds. A total of 57 women have been trained under the venture out of which 12 are actively employed, 30 work on a vocational basis and 15 are yet to start off with production unit. Though they don’t have any fixed monthly revenue, since it depends upon the season, the revenue generation is triple the revenue invested. While the employees are paid, as per their quantity of production.
Fidgety fingers, at present function in Gangtok, and do not have any branches. However, their production teams are located at Sichey in East Sikkim, Bermiok Tokal and Sumbuk in South Sikkim.
Devika’s mantra to success is simple, yet effective-‘Dedication, hardwork and humility’.
